Hand – Dupuytren’s contracture
The condition is also known as the abnormal thickening of the subcutaneous fibrous tissue of the hand. . The etiology of the contracture is still unknown. It is usually a hereditary disorder which mostly occurs in men (10:1).
Why would you need the procedure?
Dupuytren’s contracture is a disease affecting the superficial (subcutaneous) fascia – the fibrous layer of the tissue of the hand and fingers. It causes a formation of the subcutaneous nodules, followed by the cords and flexion contracture (bending) of the fingers in the final stage of the disease.
When would you need the procedure?
The best solution is to perform a surgical procedure in the early stage of the disease in order to prevent the skin affection and contractures.
What does the procedure include?
Partial fasciectomy allows a good correction of contractures of the joints and the hand function is restored very soon. Complications are very rare. This disease causes changes in other structures of the hand (loss of skin, shortening of the neurovascular structures, contractures of the joint capsules and ligaments and shortening of the tendon sheath). Dupuytren’s contracture shows a recurrent course of the disease after the procedure.
How to get prepared?
Special preparations for the procedure are not necessary. The hand function is soon restored after the procedure.
