Hernia surgical repair
The surgical removal of the organ protrusion also known as the hernioplasty.
When is the surgical procedure required?
Hernia is the abnormal protrusion of an organ. The bowel or the omentum (fatty abdominal membrane) pass through the normal openings of the abdominal wall or weakened areas of the abdominal muscles. Hernia occurs in people of both sexes and at all ages. There are several types of hernia, but the most common are: 1) inguinal (groin) hernia, occurs in the inguinal area, may be unilateral or bilateral, more often in males 2) femoral (inner thigh) hernia, occurs under the inguinal area in the upper part of the inner thigh, more often in females 3) umbilical (navel) hernia, occurs in the middle part of the anterior abdominal wall, in the navel or directly around the navel 4) epigastric hernia occurs in the middle of the abdominal wall, from the inferior end of the sternum down to the level above the navel 5) ventral (postoperative) hernia occurs along surgical scars. After the ventral hernia develops, it cannot heal on its own, but expands over time and causes more severe problems. Sometimes it can lead to life threatening complications (trapped herniated tissue or the incarceration). A surgical procedure is necessary in order to prevent these life threatening complications and improve quality of life.
What does the surgery include?
The surgical treatment approach can be traditional or laparoscopic, depends on a type and size of the hernia, as well as on the condition of the abdominal wall. Hernia surgical repair can be performed in local, regional or under general anesthesia in the outpatient surgery program.
How to get prepared?
Day before surgery a patient should eat light food and stop smoking and drinking alcohol and not take anything orally after a night’s sleep.
Related tests and examinations:
Physical examination and tests indicated by the anaesthesiologist (laboratory tests, ECG, heart and lung X-ray scan, physical examination by other specialist) should be performed after the examination of abdominal surgeon.
