Laser treatment for varicose veins with mini-phlebectomy or foam sclerotherapy
The procedure is also known as the EVLA or EVLT.
Why would you need the procedure?
Laser treatment for varicose veins is the minimally invasive therapy method for insufficient junctions connecting the main superficial veins (great and small saphenous veins) with the deep veins. The insufficient junctions cause varicose veins.
When would you need the procedure?
This procedure is indicated when varicose veins cause discomforts (pain, cramps, itching, heaviness and edema of the legs), complications (bleeding, inflammation, ulcers) or pose an aesthetic problem.
What does the procedure include?
Ultrasound guided catheter insertion is performed through the main superficial vein up to the junction between the superficial and deep veins. The treated vein is closed by applying the laser energy. It is performed under local anaesthesia. The procedure is followed by the foam sclerosation of the varicose superficial veins or surgical microphlebectomy.
How to get prepared?
A patient is to shave the affected leg and groin at home, on the day of the procedure or one day before the procedure. A patient is to wear elastic compression stockings for 3 weeks after the procedure. In the first week, elastic compression stockings should be worn during the night and day, but in the following 2 weeks only during the day. In the first couple of days, it is important to avoid standing and sitting for a longer time. A patient could resume his sport activities after three weeks.
Related tests and examinations:
Color Doppler ultrasound examination of the veins on the legs should be performed before the procedure as well as a preoperative work up for minor outpatient procedures.
