Liposuction
The surgical procedure that uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body.
When is surgical procedure required?
The procedure is performed for aesthetic reasons to permanently safely remove small localized pockets of fat that do not respond to diet or exercise and to transform a certain part of the body like chin, upper arms, knees, riding pants, hips, limbs and abdominal wall.
What does the surgery include?
Large amounts of medicated fluid are injected into the fatty areas. The fluid causes the fatty tissue to swell, making it easier to remove through a cannula. The procedure takes 1 to 2 hours and is performed under general or local anaesthesia with intravenous sedation.
How to get prepared?
The day before surgery a patient should eat light food and stop smoking and drinking alcohol and not take anything orally after a night’s sleep. Wearing compression garments after liposuction is important. The patient usually returns to work after 5 to 14 days. More strenuous activity may be resumed after 2 to 4 weeks. Full recovery from swelling and bruising may take up to 6 months.
Related tests and examinations:
Physical examination and tests indicated by the anaesthesiologist (laboratory tests, ECG, heart and lung X-ray scan, physical examination by another specialist) should be performed after the examination by a plastic surgeon.
