Sinus surgery
The procedure is also known as the Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS).
When is the surgical procedure required?
The surgery is performed when a patient has nasal breathing difficulties and experiences mucus secretions moving from the nose to the throat and in case of frequent headaches or reduced sense of smell. An otorhinolaryngology specialist can indicate a surgery after a physical examination and nasal fiber-optic endoscopy examination, or in case of inflammatory changes verified by CT or MRI scans of the sinuses, as well as when antibiotics, anti-allergy drugs, drops, nasal sprays, aerosols or inhalations fail to manage to treat medical problem.
What does the surgery include?
Guided by endoscope under general anaesthesia, a surgeon dilates the sinus ostium i.e. natural opening of the sinus in the so-called FESS (functional endoscopic sinus surgery) and restores the normal nasal and sinus passage function and drainage of mucus secretions.
How to get prepared?
Day before surgery a patient should eat light food and stop smoking and drinking alcohol and not take anything orally after a night’s sleep.
Related tests and examinations:
Otorhinolaryngologist examination broaden with diagnostic sinus X-ray, sinus CT, and sinus MRI. Physical examination and tests indicated by the anaesthesiologist (laboratory tests, ECG, heart and lung X-ray scan, physical examination by other specialist) should be performed.
