Surgery of pilonidal sinus
Surgery of pilonidal sinus is also known as the ingrown hair surgery.
When is the surgical procedure required?
An acute form of the pilonidal sinus presents with a painful ulcer above the coccyx, accompanied by the local edema, redness and a severe pain. In case of the spontaneous perforation the pus starts to drain in oedematous area. A chronic form of the pilonidal sinus drains a hemorrhagic-purulent content occasionally and repeatedly. Fistulous openings may always be observed on the surface of the skin. Patients experience mild pain or do not have pain at all. The most efficient therapy is surgical procedure since conservative methods lack in long-term results.
What does the surgery include?
When an acute form of the pilonidal sinus i.e. the pilonidal abscess occurs, the surgical treatment is simple and includes the surgical incision and drainage of the inflammatory content. The chronic form of the pilonidal sinus is more demanding and is performed by applying various surgical methods. The surgery can be performed under the local, regional or general anesthesia during an outpatient surgery program.
How to get prepared?
Day before surgery a patient should eat light food and stop smoking and drinking alcohol and not take anything orally after a night’s sleep.
Related tests and examinations:
Physical examination and tests indicated by the anaesthesiologist (laboratory tests, ECG, heart and lung X-ray scan, physical examination by other specialist) should be performed after the examination of abdominal surgeon.
