Thyroidectomy
The procedure is also known as the surgery of the thyroid gland.
When is the surgical procedure required?
The surgery is performed in case of a suspected tumor, verified by a cytological analysis of an ultrasound guided node puncture of the thyroid gland or in case of the enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) which can cause breathing/swallowing difficulties. A physician specialist indicates the surgical procedure after a physical examination and diagnostic tests e.g. ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland with color-flow Doppler ultrasonography, ultrasound guided puncture with a cytological analysis and potential thyroid scintigraphy.
What does the surgery include?
A surgical removal of the entire or half of the thyroid gland is performed.
How to get prepared?
Day before surgery a patient should eat light food and stop smoking and drinking alcohol and not take anything orally after a night’s sleep.
Related tests and examinations:
Otorhinolaryngologist examination broaden with ultrasound examination and guided cytological puncture of thyroid gland. Physical examination and tests indicated by the anaesthesiologist (laboratory tests, ECG, heart and lung X-ray scan, physical examination by other specialist) should be performed.
