Ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy for varicose veins
It is also known as the UGFS.
Why would you need the procedure?
Foam sclerotherapy is performed in case of recurrent varicose veins. It is accompanied by a laser treatment.
When would you need the procedure?
This procedure is indicated when varicose veins cause discomforts (pain, cramps, itching, heaviness and edema of the legs), complications (bleeding, inflammation, ulcers) or pose an esthetic problem.
What does the procedure include?
Ultrasound guided needle insertion is performed in the vein lumen. A sterile sclerosing agent is then infused by the needle in order to cause an inflammation, followed by the gradual closure or disappearance of the varicose veins. Depending on the diameter of varicose veins, concentrations of the sclerosing agents may differ.
How to get prepared?
A patient is to shave the affected leg and groin at home, on the day of the procedure or one day before the procedure. A patient is to wear elastic compression stockings for 3 weeks after the procedure. In the first week, elastic compression stockings should be worn during the night and day, but in the following 2 weeks only during the day. In the first couple of days, it is important to avoid standing and sitting for a longer period. A patient could resume his sport activities after three weeks.
Related tests and examinations:
Color Doppler ultrasound examination of the veins on the legs should be performed before the procedure as well as a preoperative work up for minor outpatient procedures.
